Hope everyone is having a good weekend. I wanted
to talk to all the crime watch groups about a concern that one of the local police departments crime watch coordinators recently
brought to my attention, and at the same time reemphasis something that I talk about at all the crime watch meetings. As those
of you that have attended one of my meetings know I always advise you that the crime watch program emphasizes that whenever
you see something out of the ordinary or suspicious the faster that you notify law enforcement the quicker we can respond
and look into the situation. We do not want you to confront the persons or try and interrogate them, that’s law enforcements
job. I always tell you that we do not want to see you get hurt nor are you vigilantes.
What has happened with one of the local police departments
crime watch areas is that some of the community residents have actually started stopping people that they do not recognize
as members of their community and question them as to why and what they are doing in their neighborhood. That’s not
a very good idea and may actually get you hurt if in fact they are up to no good. So please remember the quicker you
notify us the faster we can respond, and that may be the difference of them leaving the area and still being their when we
arrive.
Also we have scheduled our next Sheriff’s town
hall meeting for Monday August 30, 2010 at 6:30 PM. The location for the town hall meeting will be the First Baptist Church
of Umatilla. The church is located on the East side of SR19 behind the McDonalds restaurant on the North side of Umatilla.
Please pass the word to all your friends and neighbors and if you live in the general area please try and attend as you will
find this to be both a very informative and entertaining meeting.
Everyone take care

First of all for the bad news. During the first eleven
days of this month we have had seventy vehicles broken into, out of the seventy vehicles sixty seven were UNLOCKED.
You would not believe the number of GPS systems and cell phones, that were taken. Also in at least three of the cases the
vehicles batteries were taken (one in the Astor area and the other two in the Leesburg area). There was at least one firearm
taken. Now for some good news we did make several juvenile arrests in the Clermont and Leesburg areas for braking into vehicles.
In everyone of the arrests the juveniles all stated that all they would do is go to a neighborhood after dark, walk the streets
and check parked vehicles for unlocked doors. They all stated that they were not even looking at vehicles that were locked
(there were more than enough cars that were unlocked with things of value in them to even worry about busting out a window).
Please pass the word to always lock your vehicles whenever they are left unattended.
Just for general information, nationwide there has
been an increase in catalytic converter thefts.
We have also had several trailer thefts from the
Eustis, Montverde, and Groveland areas. And yes for those that have asked even if the vehicle is unlocked it’s still
breaking and entering. Hope all of you have had a good weekend and were not one of the victims!!!!! But I do know for a fact
that at least two of the crime watch coordinators were victims of having a unlocked vehicle broken into---what more can I
say.

This e-mail is in regards to the e-mail that I sent
out to everyone June 21,2010 warning about a e-mail that was circulating warning of homemade explosive soda bottle bombs.
In my e-mail I stated that I was concerned about the e-mails advising of the ingredients and basically how to make them. Well
unfortunately we have had an incident in the Clermont area where a mail box was blown apart with what appears to have been
a homemade soda bottle bomb. Thank God it was a isolated incident and no one was injured. If you should see any bottles that
appear to have liquid and any shiny objects(tin foil or aluminum foil) inside of it do not touch it. Call Law Enforcement
so it can be checked out.
We have had several incidents in Lake
County were twenty dollar counterfeit bills have been passed.
In the Lake
Mack area we have had several cases were air conditioner units have been
damaged to get the cooper wire. In several of the incidents a white van pulling a black trailer was seen.
Now for this ---In the last thirty days we have had
107 vehicles broken into and guess what ???????? 96 were unlocked. Please pass the word to lock your vehicles.
In the very south end of the county we had a white
male approximately 30-35 years old driving a newer black van approached two young girls and tried to engage them in
conversation then exposed himself to them. Please warn your children and grand children to never approach strangers
and to report any strange activity. You also may want to talk to them about safe houses in your neighborhood that they can
run to in a emergency.
Just for your general information we are working
on having the next Sheriff’s Town Hall Meeting in Umatilla sometime in August.
Walter

The Vial of Life Program is a free program designed for seniors and individuals with a medical condition
to provide pertinent medical information to emergency personnel who respond to and treat home emergencies. The Vial
of Life contains much of the medical history needed by the responding emergency personnel, such as existing medical condition,
allergies, medication currently being taken, and emergency contact information.
Vial of Life participants complete a medical information form which is placed into a medicine vial. A
"Vial of Life" sticker is placed on the vial which is then put in the participant's refrigerator in plain view. Another
"Vial of Life" sticker is placed on the front door to alert emergency personnel that medical information is located inside
of the refrigerator. In many cases, this information could prove invaluable to the responders.
The Vial of Life may be obtained by contacting the Community Services Unit of the Lake County Sheriff's Office
at (352) 326-8108 or by sending an email to commservices@lcso.org. Existing program members can click here to print out additional medical information forms. **Note: you will need the free Adobe Reader program to view the forms. |
Now YOU Know.....
Blue lights
above traffic signals are called "tattletale lights" or "red light confirmation lights." Whenever the traffic signal is red, the blue light is on.
Police previously had to testify that a vehicle was in an intersection when it ran a red light.
Now, officers only have to see the blue light to know the vehicle ran the red signal.
Florida Department of Transportation officials are paying for the
lights at intersections on state roads in nine Central Florida counties, reported a representative from the Florida Department
of Transportation. Originally,
the DOT put up small white lights at a cost of about $100 each. The DOT is switching to less-expensive blue lights, which
are LED (light emitting diodes) that run cooler and need less maintenance.
Running a red light in Florida can bring a fine of $188.50.
Violators also face adding three or four points to their driving record, unless they complete a state-approved
driver-safety course.
