Safe Fun in the Sun with Fido
The summer is in full swing and it's time for fun outdoor games in the sun. As fun as they are, these outdoor activities pose a few risks to Fido, whether he's a frisky puppy or a tame senior.

Follow these basic tips to avoid a few summer hazards:

Dehydration - Dogs love to play outdoors, but they can overdo it in hot weather. Make sure your doggie is hydrated because he'll feel more intense heat at his level, closer to the pavement, than you will.

Heatstroke - I know you've heard this before, but it bears repeating... never leave your dog in the car. Even with the windows down, a car can reach oven-like temperatures that are fatal to Fido. Leave him at home instead or have someone stay in the air-conditioned car with him.

  • Immediately: Get your pet into a cool environment or into shade and immerse an overheated dog in cool, not cold, water or gently pour cool water over them. Give cool water and place ice packs on their head and neck. If the dog has been moved indoors place a fan in front of the dog to aid in evaporation of heat.  Short nosed breeds such as pugs and bulldogs, can't pant as efficiently as other dogs, young puppies, senior dogs, over-weight dogs, and dogs with respiratory, cardiovascular or other health problems are even more susceptible to heat related stress than other dogs.
  • Please remember dogs only have sweat glands on the pads of their feet and on their nose which are inadequate for cooling during hot and humid days. Only walk your pet in early morning and after 7pm, when the pavement isn't so hot on the pads of their feet. The surface temperature of asphalt on a 100 degree day can cause second degree burns on a dogs paws in as little as 10 minutes of walking.
  • Signs of heat stroke:
    • Vomiting

    • Rapid heartbeat

    • Staring expression

    • Vigorous panting

    • Lying down and unwilling to get up

    • Dark red gums

    • Tacky or dry gums

    • Thick saliva

    • Dizziness

    • Collapsing or fainting

    WILD MUSHROOMS:
Many pet owners do not realize that some of the mushrooms that grow in their yard are toxic to dogs.
Symptoms of mushroom poising can range from mild vomiting and diarrea to severe digestive problems to complete liver failure. Dig up all these mushrooms and discard. Do not smash or kick them, as this will
only spread the spores and even more will grow. Check your yard each morning for new growth especially in this damp and rainy weather. If you catch your dog eating a mushroom, Remove any pieces from the dogs mouth, and call your vet immediately. Take sample to vet as there are many varieties and is hard to discribe over the phone.

    WATER/BOATING/FISHING SAFETY ISSUES
While its true that most dogs can swim, some dogs are initially afraid of water and some dogs will never like swimming and water activities. If your dog doesn't jump right in or seems afraid of the water at first, let him/or her get used to it gradually. NEVER throw a nervous inexperienced swimmer in the water. With gentle encourgement most dogs will soon realize that they can do the "doggie paddle" quite well.
    POOLS:
People who have pools, train your dog to know where the stairs are to get out should they ever fall in Keep all chemicals up and away from pets. While playing fetch in pool, remember your pet can tire easly and run out of energery to swim to stairs during exciting play. Prevent unsupervised swimming by locking gates.
Lakes and Oceans are fun for every one, and dogs just like humans need life jackets and plenty of fresh water too. Remember your dog can sun burn too, so provide shade for your pet and remember upon returning home bathe your dog and get rid of all the sand especially between their toes and in their ears, as trapped sand can cause irratation and lead to infection.
    BOATING/FISHING:
If your planning a wonderful day out in your boat and maybe do some fishing, remember to bring Fido's fresh water a shady safe spot on the boat for him to rest and be out of the fishing area. His life vest that should be put on him before you leave the shore. Remember, FISHING HOOKS!! their great in a fishes mouth BUT NOT in or around your dog.
    CAMPING:
    I. D. your Dog FIRST MICRO CHIP is GREAT! and the best. Collars get pulled off or can be taken off. Protect your pet against TICKS/FLEAS/HEARTWORM just to name a few. Bring lots of fresh water from home. Never allow your dog to drink from streams or puddles. You never know what kind of contanaments or polluntion is in the water. Always keep your pet on a leash for total control. Respect other people in area so your dog is not barking and disturbing others. Never tie your pet up unsupervised and never use a choke collar. Bring a first aid kit for Fido as well as yourself. When feeding Fido, clean up and store his dishes in a safe place, so other animals will not help themselves.

    BREAKING  NEWS   PLEASE READ!
ALL PETS WARNING FOR PLANTATION PET OWNERS
DEATH COULD OCCUR IF PET INGESTS THIS MULCH

Please tell every dog or cat owner you know. Even if you don't have a pet, please pass this to those who do.

Over the weekend, the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. The dogs loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dog (Calypso) decided the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large helping.  She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn't acting lethargic in any way.  The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk. Halfway through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly.

Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the company's web site, This product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats.

Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey's, and they claim that "It is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual dog).  However, 98% of all dogs won't eat it."

Snopes site gives the following information: http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/cocoamulch.asp *
Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply and other garden supply  stores contains a  lethal ingredient called 'Theobromine'. It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks.

Theobromine is in all chocolate, especially dark or baker's chocolate which is toxic to dogs. Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, a xanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline.

A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine.
