Better Business Bureau Cautions about Census Scams
10/9/2009
Over
the next 18 months, 1.4 million U.S. Census workers will be surveying the population of the country to gather demographic
information about everyone living here. As the 2010 census process begins, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) Serving
Central Florida advises citizens to cooperate carefully in order to avoid becoming a victim of census-related scams.
Citizens
are required by law to respond to the U.S. Census Bureau’s requests for information. Census data will be used in allocation
of more than $300 billion in federal funds as well as in determining the number of Congressional representatives that each
state is allowed.
“Most
people are understandably cautious about giving out personal information to unsolicited phone callers or visitors, but the
Census is an exception to the rule,” said Judy Pepper, President/CEO of the Central Florida BBB. “Scammers know
that the public is more willing to share personal data when participating in the Census, so they take advantage of this opportunity
by posing as government workers to get access to personal financial information.”
The
BBB and local media have gotten calls from citizens who have been approached by census workers, but are uncertain about giving
out personal information. The BBB has been in contact with local census officials, who have urged Central Florida residents
to call the US Census Bureau at (800) 923-8282 if they have concerns.
The BBB offers the following
advice to help distinguish between bona fide Census workers and con artists:
- U.S. Census workers will have identification, a handheld
device and a confidentiality notice. Caution: never invite strangers into your home.
- U.S. Census workers will not ask for your Social Security
number or any information about bank or credit card accounts.
- U.S. Census workers will not ask you for money or
say that you owe money.
- U.S. Census workers will not harass or intimidate
you.
- U.S. Census workers will not contact you by email
– only by phone, by mail or in person.
For
more information regarding the 2010 Census, visit the U.S. Census Bureau online at www.census.gov.
Census
to Begin With the U.S.. Census process beginning, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) advises people
to be cooperative, but cautious, so as not to become a victim of fraud or identity theft. The first phase of the 2010
U.S. Census is under way as workers have begun verifying the addresses of households across the country. Eventually,
more than 140,000 U.S. Census workers will count every person in the United States
and will gather information about every person living at each address including name, age, gender, race, and other relevant
data.
The big question is - how do you tell the difference between a U.S. Census
worker and a con artist? BBB offers the following advice: **If a U.S. Census worker knocks on your door, they will have
a badge, a hand held device, a Census Bureau canvas bag, and a confidentiality notice. Ask to see their identification
and their badge before answering their questions. However, you should never invite anyone you don't know into your
home.
**Census workers
are currently only knocking on doors to verify address information. Do not give your Social Security number, credit card
or banking information to anyone, even if they claim they need it for the U.S. Census.
REMEMBER,
NO MATTER WHAT THEY ASK, YOU REALLY ONLY NEED TO TELL THEM HOW MANY PEOPLE LIVE AT YOUR ADDRESS.
While
the Census Bureau might ask for basic financial information, such as a salary range, YOU DON'T HAVE TO ANSWER ANYTHING
AT ALL ABOUT YOUR FINANCIAL SITUATION.. The Census Bureau will not ask for Social Security, bank account, or credit
card numbers, nor will employees solicit donations. Any one asking for that information is NOT with the Census Bureau.
AND REMEMBER,
THE CENSUS BUREAU HAS DECIDED NOT TO WORK WITH ACORN ON GATHERING THIS INFORMATION. No Acorn worker should approach you
saying he/she is with the Census Bureau.
Eventually, Census workers may contact you by telephone, mail, or in person
at home. However, the Census Bureau will not contact you by E- mail, so be on the lookout for E-mail scams impersonating the
Census.
Never click on a link or open any attachments in an E-mail that are supposedly from the U.S. Census Bureau.
PLEASE
SHARE THIS INFORMATION WITH FAMILY, FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS.
'3' steps, STR . Read and Learn! Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately,
the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail
to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
STROKE: Remember the 1st Three Letters....S.T.R. Now doctors say a bystander
can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions: S *Ask the individual to SMILE. T
*Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)(i.e. It is sunny out today.) R*Ask
him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks,
call emergency numberimmediatelyand describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. New Sign of a Stroke
-------- Stick out Your Tongue NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out
his tongue.. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke. A
cardiologist says if everyone shares this with information with 10 people; you can bet that at least
one life will be saved. I have done my part. Will you?

webmaster note: the information below was confirmed by a call to Genie Garage Door company on 7/21/09
Subject:
Warning
DO NOT USE CFL light bulbs in your garage
door opener (at least not Genie openers). I put some in mine months ago to save energy and get brighter light with lower power.
They worked for a while, then one day I noticed the opener "humming". I touched it and it was red hot! The motor windings
had heated up and were dripping melted insulation out of the opener. I pulled the plug and let it cool down and tried it.
It worked twice, then quit. I figured it was just old, and needed replacement. WRONG, it was the CFLs! (I had some suspicion
they might not work as they don't work with most dimmers or circuits that don't use an actual switch or relay to turn them
on).
I bought and installed a new Genie opener
and called Genie's 800 number, just to check if CFLs would be OK in it. They said, "ABSOLUTELY NOT! If you do, the opener
will try to run and burn itself out!" (exactly what mine did). Turns out, the opener uses electronic switching and not relays
to turn on the light bulbs. This circuit is like a dimmer and IS NOT compatible with most CFL bulbs. I even used bulbs that
were supposed to be dimmable, but it still ended up frying the electronics. When that goes, so do other parts of the
circuit that drives the motor and tries to run it at a lower power. It can't actually turn and just ends up heating up until
it fails. I'm glad I caught mine before it caught fire. It was VERY HOT! I was surprised the thermal overloads hadn't stopped
it.
Tell everyone you know, DO NOT PUT CFL bulbs
in your garage door opener, this is a safety hazard! Pass it on, PLEASE.

ICE - 'In Case of Emergency'
We all carry our mobile (cell) phones with names and
numbers stored in its memory but nobody, other than ourselves, knows which of these numbers
belong to our closest family or friends.
If we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people attending us would have our cell phone but
wouldn't know who to call. Yes, there are hundreds of numbers stored but which one is the contact person in case of
an emergency? Hence this 'ICE' (In Case of Emergency) Campaign.
The concept of 'ICE' is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations. As cell phones
are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should
be contacted during an emergency under the name 'ICE' ( In Case Of Emergency).
The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scene of an accident, there were always cell
phones with victims, but he didn't know which number to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there
was a nationally recognized name for this purpose. In an emergency situation, emergency service personnel and hospital staff
would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialing the number stored in your cell phone as 'ICE.'
For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3, etc. A great idea that will make a difference!
Let's spread the concept of ICE by storing an ICE number in our cell phones today!

SAFETY SIMON SAYS......
Staying with "awareness" as our theme we can see that being aware not only helps us in reducing
the odds of becoming a victim to crime it can also help us in protecting ourselves from becoming an accident victim.
Throughout our community we can see a number of people making assumptions. When driving a car you might assume
because we are a quiet community with minimal traffic you would only need to slow down and look and not come to
a complete stop at a stop sign before continuing. Same when driving a golf cart. A number of drivers of both cars
and golf carts allow their pets to sit on their laps assuming that as a driver they still have complete control of their
vehicle. A walker, jogger or bicyclist while wearing both ear pieces to listen to their music assume that they can still
"hear" oncoming traffic or other dangers. In all of the above examples the assumption of safety is mistaken. Be
aware instead. Be aware that even with our minimal traffic accidents do happen. Make sure to stop and look before
continuing. Be aware that it takes only a split second for an accident to happen. A pet in your arm, though you
and your pet may be enjoying the ride, can be a disadvantage and distraction in that spit second. What safety does
your pet enjoy in case of a collision and the vehicle's air bag employs? Or your pet is thrown from the golf cart? Injuries
do occur even at slow speeds. And when you are out and about listening to your music through your headphones be totally
aware of your surroundings at all times. Drivers may assume that you can hear them approaching while you assume that
drivers see you and are looking out for you. Both assumptions could result with you getting hurt.
And would you be able to hear a "bad guy" approaching? Yes, even here we are not immune to the criminal element.
So be safe. Be aware.
